How easy is a Mecano Kit Home to construct?
Thinking about building your own Kit Home?
"Just how easy is it going to be?"
It's not quite as easy as falling off a log, but building a Mecano Kit Home really is the closest thing to it.

Each wall frame and truss will come to you (usually flat-packed) with an easy to follow manual.
So easy in fact, that you can't possibly fit the components in the wrong place because the computer generated bits and pieces are pre-dimpled, punched, and notched so it just simply won't let you!
It's really that plain and simple! |
|
Our customers often refer to our kits as "kindergarten stuff"! Don't believe me? Just ask our sales people to pass on the testimonies of our many happy customers who are eager to share their experiences with other Mecano customers.
But if that's still not enough, we want you to be absolutely assured that when you purchase a Mecano Kit home, we will be ready to assist you at any stage throughout your project. The Mecano support team prides itself in "good old fashioned customer service".

The Mecano Kit Home Procedure.
When you have decided which kit you want, plans will be prepared along with the soil test you have provided. When notification comes from council and Mecano is given the go ahead, your kit home will be scheduled for delivery within 7 working
days.
Full sets of instructions will be provided for
your kit home and your steel
floor floor system (if you need one) These will explain
it in a simple step-by-step method. For those who have decided to go with a concrete slab, you will have a detailed set of working plans showing all hold down
positions.

Now comes the exciting part!
Whether you have a steel floor or a concrete slab, you are now ready to place the walls in position. (A standard 3m wall can weigh between
22-30kg)
Now really, how easy was that?
|
|
Time for the Trusses ...
What makes construction so quick and easy is the way the frames have pre-punched tie downs where the trusses are located. Trusses are fixed at 1200mm centres in non cyclonic areas and 900 centres in cyclonic areas. A standard 6300 mm truss weighs just 26.5 kilograms, and a standard 7200 truss weighs 34 kilograms.
Now it's really starting to look like something!
Don't forget the lintels above the door and window openings.
(A lintel is a pre-cut piece of galvanised metal sheeting that fits above the door and window openings for added strength wherever a truss sits on an opening). But don't worry, everything is done for you, just pick up the piece marked "window lintel" or "door lintel".
Once the lintels are fitted, you're well and truly on your way. The trusses should only take a few hours to fix into place. You'll probably be ready to start fixing the roof battens and bracing after lunch. And while you're having lunch, just sit back and be very proud of what you have accomplished in well under a
week.

 |
Ready for the roof battens...
The next step is fixing the roof battens. Your manual will show the spaces from the apex to the
outside Fascia board. Setting the trusses and roof battens usually takes a good day once the trusses are assembled and ready. When the roof braces are fixed into place, the roof bracing is fixed to the locations shown on your specific roof plan.
Now we're getting fair dinkum!
It's time to light up the Bar-B, get your mates around, crack a few coldies (that's after you've finished the job) and have a good old
chinwag about how you're on your way to beating the mortgage blues!
|
|
Now it's time for the Front and (optional) back awning, decking and external
cladding. Then fit the windows, and put the outside cladding on.
(Don't forget the insulation!) And don't worry! Your instruction manual will tell
you how to affix you roof sheeting, windows, hardiplank etc.!
(By the way, the home being built here is a standard 2 bedroom
Swagman 4). |
And that's how it should look if you're building on to a slab!
Now we think with a couple of good blokes (naturally with a fair bit of help from mum), you should be moving in between 6 and 8 weeks.

Craig and Sandra Andrews of Honeyflower Court,
Bucca, (via Bundaberg) sent the following photos and testimonial :

"I have used the 2 bedroom house as an extension to my existing house. And because I have done all the plastering and building work myself, the cost of the complete building has been less than $40,000. Some of my friends and family have the ideas of saving enough money and building their own Mecano Kit home on their block of land.
Yours sincerely,
Craig and Sandra Andrews.
10th March 2006.
(Craig also has electrician and plumbing friends which helped save considerably.)
